A Condensed Nusach, Agency, and Kashrut Supervision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"direction: ltr\">Some authorities allow someone who lacks full understanding of these concepts to simply recite a condensed formula and say: \u201cAll the separations and the redemption of <em>ma\u2019aser sheni<\/em> shall take effect as written in the <em>nusach<\/em> in my possession.\u201d He must also physically separate more than one percent for the <em>terumot<\/em> and set aside a coin for redeeming <em>ma\u2019aser sheni<\/em> (<em>\u1e24azon Ish<\/em>, <em>Demai<\/em> 15:6; <em>Min\u1e25at Yitz\u1e25ak<\/em> 1:85).<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr\">In practice, however, one should not rely on this. As we have learned, one who does not understand the meaning of this mitzva and its components cannot fulfill it. Moreover, even one who reads the <em>nusach<\/em> but does not understand it has not fulfilled his obligation (Mahari\u1e6d Algazi). This was also the ruling of R. Tzvi Pesa\u1e25 Frank (<em>Har Tzvi<\/em>, Zera\u2019im 1:48) and R. Ovadia Yosef (<em>\u1e24azon Ovadia: Terumot and Ma\u2019asrot<\/em>, p. 192). My teacher, Rav Tzvi Yehuda Kook, of blessed memory, was very insistent about this; on occasion, he even erased this suggestion from his students\u2019 prayer books.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr\">The owner of the produce may appoint an agent to separate <em>terumot<\/em> and <em>ma\u2019asrot<\/em> on his behalf. Moreover, if he has made it clear that he approves of his son, daughter, or someone else separating <em>terumot<\/em> and <em>ma\u2019asrot<\/em> from his produce, that person may do so for him without requesting explicit permission. Still, it is preferable to receive explicit permission.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr\">Many field and factory owners appoint a kashrut supervisor authorized by the Rabbinate as their agent to separate <em>terumot<\/em> and <em>ma\u2019asrot<\/em> on their behalf.
