Some people fast on the eve of <em>Rosh Chodesh<\/em> and recite special \u201c<em>Yom Kippur Katan<\/em>\u201d prayers prior to the <em>Mincha<\/em> service. The day before <em>Rosh Chodesh<\/em> is called \u201c<em>Yom Kippur Katan<\/em>\u201d ( Minor Day of Atonement) because it is a time to atone for the sins of the previous month, just as <em>Yom Kippur<\/em> is a time to atone for the sins of the previous year (see <em>Mishna Berura<\/em> 417:4, <em>Kaf HaChaim<\/em> 10-21).
