Even though one is not obligated to eat a meal on <em>Rosh Chodesh<\/em>, one must mention it when reciting <em>Birkat HaMazone<\/em> because of the importance of the day, which requires additional sacrifices (<em>Shabbat<\/em> 24a with <em>Tosafot<\/em>). <em>Ya\u2019aleh VeYavo<\/em> is inserted in the blessing of <em>Rachem<\/em>, because both are prayers of supplication. <\/p>\n<p>If one forgot to say <em>Ya\u2019aleh VeYavo<\/em> in <em>Birkat HaMazone<\/em>, he need not repeat the prayer because one who forgets to mention the sanctity of a particular day must repeat <em>Birkat HaMazone<\/em> only on days when there is an obligation to eat a meal with bread, like <em>Shabbat<\/em> and <em>Yom Tov<\/em>. On <em>Rosh Chodesh<\/em> and <em>Chol HaMoed<\/em>, however, one is not obligated to eat such a meal. Therefore, from the perspective of the sanctity of the day, one need not recite <em>Birkat HaMazone<\/em>. Consequently, if one accidentally omitted <em>Ya\u2019aleh VaYavo<\/em>, he need not repeat it. (<em>Shulchan Aruch<\/em> 424:1)<sup><a id=\"_ze01fenref1_14\" class=\"aup1\" href=\"#_ze01fen1_14\">[14]<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>One who began a meal on <em>Rosh Chodesh<\/em>, and managed to eat a <em>kezayit<\/em> (olive-size) of bread before sunset, must say <em>Ya\u2019aleh VeYavo<\/em> in <em>Birkat HaMazone<\/em>, even if he continued eating long after nightfall (\u201cwhen the stars emerge\u201d), because the meal began on <em>Rosh Chodesh<\/em>(<em>Shulchan Aruch<\/em> 188:10; some argue, see <em>Kaf HaChaim<\/em> 43). <\/p>\n<p>If one began to eat on the eve of <em>Rosh Chodesh<\/em>, and finished his meal after nightfall, he must say <em>Ya\u2019aleh VeYavo<\/em>, provided that he ate a <em>kezayit<\/em> of bread after <em>Rosh Chodesh<\/em> began (<em>Shulchan Aruch<\/em> 271:6, <em>Mishna Berura<\/em> 29)<sup><a id=\"_ze01fenref1_15\" class=\"aup1\" href=\"#_ze01fen1_15\">[15]<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/>\n<div>\n<p><a id=\"_ze01fen1_14\" href=\"#_ze01fenref1_14\">[14]<\/a> If one realizes that he forgot <em>Ya\u2019aleh VeYavo<\/em> before beginning the blessing of <em>HaTov VeHaMeitiv<\/em>, our Sages decreed that he should say, \u201cBlessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe Who gave New Moons to His people Israel as a remembrance\u201d (<em>Shulchan Aruch<\/em> 188:7). According to the <em>Bi\u2019ur Halachah<\/em>, one should say God\u2019s Name and mention His Kingship when reciting this blessing, just as one does on <em>Shabbat<\/em> and <em>Yom Tov<\/em>. The Kaf HaChaim (31), however, maintains that God\u2019s Name and Kingship are omitted. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a id=\"_ze01fen1_15\" href=\"#_ze01fenref1_15\">[15]<\/a> If one did not eat a <em>kezayit<\/em> of bread after the stars emerged, the <em>Shulchan Aruch<\/em> rules that he must, nonetheless, say <em>Ya\u2019aleh VeYavo<\/em>, as is the law on <em>Shabbat<\/em>, as explained there. According to the <em>Rama<\/em>, however, he should not say it. The <em>Acharonim<\/em> also dispute the case of one who began <em>Seudah Shlishit<\/em> on <em>Shabbat<\/em> and finished his meal on Saturday night, which is the beginning of <em>Rosh Chodesh<\/em>.
