{"id":5523,"date":"2011-03-04T04:10:35","date_gmt":"2011-03-04T02:10:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ph.yhb.org.il\/en\/?p=5523"},"modified":"2021-03-21T09:13:36","modified_gmt":"2021-03-21T07:13:36","slug":"04-04-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ph.yhb.org.il\/en\/04-04-10\/","title":{"rendered":"10.\u00a0One Who Travels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If one travels abroad before Pesa\u1e25 and plans to return home after Pesa\u1e25, his performance of <strong>bedikat \u1e25ametz<\/strong> depends on when he departs: if he departs within thirty days of Pesa\u1e25, i.e., from Purim onward, he must search his home for <strong>\u1e25ametz<\/strong> before leaving. That he will certainly nullify his <strong>\u1e25ametz<\/strong> has no bearing, because, as we have learned, the Sages ordained that in addition to <strong>bitul \u1e25ametz<\/strong>, one must perform <strong>bedikat \u1e25ametz<\/strong>, and since he is still at home within the thirty days before Pesa\u1e25, the mitzva of <strong>bedikat \u1e25ametz<\/strong> already applies to him. Therefore, he must perform <strong>bedikat \u1e25ametz<\/strong> on his last night at home. However, he does not say a <strong>berakha<\/strong> over this search because it is conducted before the time the Sages ordained for searching (above, 3:4).<\/p>\n<p>If one leaves home more than thirty days before Pesa\u1e25, i.e., before Purim, he need not perform a search before he leaves. Then, on Erev Pesa\u1e25, he must nullify all of the <strong>\u1e25ametz<\/strong> in his possession so that he does not transgress by possessing <strong>\u1e25ametz<\/strong>. When he returns home after Pesa\u1e25, he must physically dispose of all or any significant <strong>\u1e25ametz <\/strong>in his home.<\/p>\n<p>However, if at the time of departure one intended to return home before or during Pesa\u1e25, the Sages ordained that he must perform a <strong>bedika<\/strong> before leaving, even if he sets out at the beginning of the year. This is because something could go wrong on his journey, preventing him from returning in time for <strong>bedikat \u1e25ametz<\/strong> (<strong>Pesa\u1e25im<\/strong> 6a, according to Rambam). However, if one appoints a <strong>shali\u2019a\u1e25<\/strong> to search on his behalf on the night of the 14th in case he is unable to return in time, he is not required to search before his departure. Nowadays, when one can make a phone call from anywhere in the world, one need not search before setting out on a trip because even if he is unable to return in time for <strong>bedikat \u1e25ametz<\/strong>, he can ask a friend or relative to search on his behalf (see SA 436:1-2; MB 9; SHT 10).<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>poskim<\/strong> differ over what should be done when one was supposed to perform <strong>bedikat \u1e25ametz<\/strong> before traveling but forgot to do so, and he cannot find someone to do the <strong>bedika <\/strong>on his behalf. Thus, if it is very difficult for him to return, he may rely upon his <strong>bitul \u1e25ametz<\/strong> (BHL 436:1, s.v. \u201czakuk\u201d). Then, after Pesa\u1e25, he must burn or destroy the <strong>\u1e25ametz<\/strong> he nullified, because if he derives benefit from it after Pesa\u1e25, he demonstrates that his nullification was insincere. The same applies any time one nullifies <strong>\u1e25ametz<\/strong> but does not remove it \u2013 the Sages forbid eating or deriving benefit from it after Pesa\u1e25 (SA 448:5).
