The inside of the pot is usually painted white, while the outside is decorated with different colors. Enamel is made of sand like glassware, but it is manufactured differently. In practice, one may perform <strong>hagala<\/strong> on enamel <strong>kelim<\/strong> like all other metal <strong>kelim<\/strong>.<sup><a href='#_te01ftn11_13' id='_te01ftnref11_13' class='aup1'>[13]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The same applies to all types of metals, leather, wood, and bone. Only earthenware cannot be kashered, because, due to the unique composition of earthenware, it absorbs a lot and does not release all that it absorbs.<\/p>\n<p>Plastic <strong>kelim<\/strong> that have absorbed the taste of boiling hot food are kashered via <strong>hagala<\/strong> with boiling water, like all other <strong>kelim<\/strong>. However, sometimes plastic <strong>kelim<\/strong> get scratched, making it hard to clean them well. Therefore, the accepted recommendation is to replace <strong>plastic baby bottles and pacifiers<\/strong> before Pesa\u1e25, as it is hard to clean them to the point that their original shine is restored. Nevertheless, in times of need, they can be kashered by means of a good cleaning and <strong>hagala<\/strong> or pouring boiling water from a <strong>kli rishon<\/strong>.<sup><a href='#_te01ftn11_14' id='_te01ftnref11_14' class='aup1'>[14]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<div>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/>\n<div>\n<a href='#_te01ftnref11_13' id='_te01ftn11_13'>[13]<\/a>. At first, <strong>poskim<\/strong> were uncertain about enamel because its craftsmen kept enamel\u2019s composition secret. Then, when it became known that enamel is sand-based, uncertainly arose again as to whether such <strong>kelim <\/strong>have the status of earthenware. <strong>Responsa <\/strong><strong>\u1e24atam Sofer <\/strong>(YD 113) states that enamel is kashered via light <strong>libun<\/strong>. R. Shlomo Kluger rules stringently that one may not kasher enamel even via <strong>libun<\/strong>, since it might get damaged in the process (<strong>Tuv Ta\u2019am Va-da\u2019at<\/strong> 1:183). AHS YD 121:27 states that it can be kashered by performing <strong>hagala <\/strong>three times, relying on the view of <strong>Itur <\/strong>that triple <strong>hagala<\/strong> is effective even for earthenware <strong>kelim<\/strong> once 24 hours have passed since their use with prohibited food. The accepted ruling is that they can be kashered by means of <strong>hagala<\/strong>, since they are primarily metal and the enamel coating is like glass. This is the view of <strong>Aderet<\/strong>, and so state R. Mordechai Eliyahu\u2019s <strong>Hilkhot \u1e24agim <\/strong>5:39 and <strong>\u1e24azon Ovadia<\/strong>, Pesa\u1e25, p. 157.<\/p>\n<p><a href='#_te01ftnref11_14' id='_te01ftn11_14'>[14]<\/a>. <strong>Igrot<\/strong> <strong>Moshe<\/strong> (O\u1e24 1:92) states that one should not perform <strong>hagala<\/strong> on <strong>kelim<\/strong> made of plastic or other synthetic materials not mentioned by the Rishonim, since such materials might be like earthenware, which does not release what it has absorbed. This is also the view of R. Yaakov Shaul Elyashar and <strong>Lehorot Natan <\/strong>6:69. Nonetheless, most <strong>poskim <\/strong>agree that plastic <strong>kelim <\/strong>can be kashered by means of <strong>hagala<\/strong>. These include: <strong>Responsa<\/strong> <strong>\u1e24elkat Yaakov<\/strong> 2:163; <strong>Seridei Esh<\/strong> 2:160; R. Levi Yitz\u1e25ak Halperin; R. Mordechai Eliyahu, <strong>Hilkhot \u1e24agim <\/strong>5:86; <strong>\u1e24azon Ovadia<\/strong>, Pesa\u1e25, p. 151; and <strong>Or Le-Tziyon <\/strong>3:10:13.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Enamel kelim are made of metal and coated with a thin layer of enamel for aesthetic reasons.
