{"id":5818,"date":"2010-02-02T06:00:55","date_gmt":"2010-02-02T04:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ph.yhb.org.il\/en\/?p=5818"},"modified":"2010-02-02T06:00:55","modified_gmt":"2010-02-02T04:00:55","slug":"05-02-06","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ph.yhb.org.il\/en\/05-02-06\/","title":{"rendered":"6 \u2013 Until When Can One Count?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One who is accustomed to praying <i>Ma\u2019ariv<\/i> at a late hour all year round, should [nonetheless] count after his regular prayer service. \u00a0If he counts by himself at the beginning of the night, he is liable to make a mistake or forget altogether.\u00a0 Moreover, there is an advantage to doing the mitzvah together with a congregation.<\/p>\n<p>However, one who cannot \u2013 due to time constraints \u2013 pray <i>Ma\u2019ariv<\/i> [with a <i>minyan<\/i>] after the stars emerge, but intends to pray on his own later on, should preferably count the Omer right after the stars emerge, in order to fulfill the mitzvah as soon as possible.\u00a0 Furthermore, there is reason to suspect that he might forget to count after he prays <i>Ma\u2019ariv<\/i> by himself.<sup><a href='#_ze01ftn2_5' id='_ze01ftnref2_5' class='aup1'>[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>There is a dispute among the <i>Rishonim<\/i> whether one who forgets to count at night can make it up during the day.\u00a0 The Torah indicates that the time for counting the Omer depends on the time of the Omer harvest, as it says, <i>From when the sickle begins [to cut] the standing crop shall you begin to count seven weeks<\/i> (<i>Devarim<\/i> 16:9-10).\u00a0 According to the Behag (the author of <i>Halachot Gedolot<\/i>), the <i>halachah<\/i> follows the opinion cited in Tractate <i>Menachot<\/i> (71a) that if [the harvester] fails to cut down the Omer at night, he may, <i>be\u2019di\u2019avad<\/i>, cut it down the next day.\u00a0 Subsequently, the same is true of the Omer count: if one forgets to count at night, he may, <i>be\u2019di\u2019avad<\/i>, count the next day.\u00a0 Rabbeinu Tam, however, holds that the <i>halachah<\/i> follows the opinion stated in Tractate <i>Megillah<\/i> (20b, 21a) that the mitzvah of harvesting the Omer applies at night alone.\u00a0 Therefore, one who forgets to count at night cannot make it up the next day.\u00a0 In practice, the accepted halachah is that one who forgets to count at night should count during the day without a blessing.\u00a0 On the one hand, we give credence to the opinion that says that one may count during the day. \u00a0But we omit the blessing, in order not to possibly say a blessing in vain (<i>Sh.A.<\/i>, <i>O.C.<\/i> 489:7). \u00a0Each subsequent night, he may count with a blessing (<i>Terumat HaDeshen<\/i>, <i>M.B.<\/i> 489:34).<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/>\n<div>\n<a href='#_ze01ftnref2_5' id='_ze01ftn2_5'>[5]<\/a>.
