{"id":5841,"date":"2010-02-07T06:00:34","date_gmt":"2010-02-07T04:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ph.yhb.org.il\/en\/?p=5841"},"modified":"2010-02-07T06:00:34","modified_gmt":"2010-02-07T04:00:34","slug":"05-07-06","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ph.yhb.org.il\/en\/05-07-06\/","title":{"rendered":"6 \u2013 One Who Forgets it\u2019s a Fast Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One who accidentally eats or drinks on a fast day must continue fasting, because these days were instituted as fast days due to the troubles that occurred on them.\u00a0 Even if one eats or drinks enough to be considered as one who broke his fast, thus forfeiting the ability to say <i>Aneinu<\/i> in <i>Shemoneh Esrei<\/i> (as we will explain in <i>halakha<\/i> 9, below), he is still forbidden to eat or drink.\u00a0 After all, one who committed one sin is not allowed to commit a second (SA 568:1).\u00a0 In such a scenario, the person does not have to fast a different day to make up for the fast he broke, because we are obligated to fast specifically on the days that our Sages established for fasting.\u00a0 Indeed, some people have a custom to accept upon themselves another fast to atone for the one that they broke, but one is not obligated to do so (MB 568:8).\u00a0 It is better to atone for this by giving more charity and learning more Torah.<\/p>\n<p>The <i>poskim<\/i> debate the <i>halakha<\/i> of one who forgets that it is a fast day, makes a blessing over a cup of water, and then remembers the fast.\u00a0 Some say that the prohibition of making a blessing in vain is of Biblical origin, while drinking on a fast day is only a Rabbinic injunction.\u00a0 Therefore, it is preferable to take a small drink in order to save oneself from saying a blessing in vain.\u00a0 Others maintain that since most Rishonim hold that a blessing in vain is a Rabbinic prohibition, it is better not to drink at all.\u00a0 In addition, it is improper to fix one sin by committing another one.\u00a0 It seems [to me] that this is the course of action one should take.<sup><a href='#_ze01ftn7_7' id='_ze01ftnref7_7' class='aup1'>[7]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<div>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/>\n<div>\n<a href='#_ze01ftnref7_7' id='_ze01ftn7_7'>[7]<\/a>. The authors of <i>Birkei Yosef<\/i> (beginning of 568) and <i>Yabi\u2019a Omer<\/i> (vol. 2, YD 5) write that one should drink a little, because the Shulchan Aruch rules (215:4) that making a blessing in vain is a Torah prohibition.\u00a0 However, the majority of Rishonim hold that this prohibition is Rabbinic.\u00a0 Besides which, these fasts days are <i>mi-divrei kabbalah<\/i> (instituted by the prophets), and some say that such <i>mitzvot<\/i> have the status of Torah law.\u00a0 Furthermore, it is possible to say that these fasts have a Torah aspect to them by the fact that they are like vows.\u00a0 Moreover, it is better to commit a sin passively than to do so actively.\u00a0 This is how the authors of <i>Da\u2019at Torah<\/i> (568:1) and <i>Kaf HaChayim<\/i> (568:16) rule.\u00a0 Similarly, the Mishnah Berurah (515:5) rules that one who recites a blessing over <i>muktzeh<\/i> food on <i>yom tov<\/i> should not eat it.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One who accidentally eats or drinks on a fast day must continue fasting, because these days were instituted as fast days due to the troubles that occurred on them.\u00a0 Even if one eats or drinks enough to be considered as one who broke his fast, thus forfeiting the ability to say Aneinu in Shemoneh Esrei [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[60],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5841","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-05-07"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
