{"id":5847,"date":"2010-02-07T09:00:09","date_gmt":"2010-02-07T07:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ph.yhb.org.il\/en\/?p=5847"},"modified":"2010-02-07T09:00:09","modified_gmt":"2010-02-07T07:00:09","slug":"05-07-09","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ph.yhb.org.il\/en\/05-07-09\/","title":{"rendered":"9 \u2013 Children, Bridegrooms, and Soldiers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Children who have yet to reach the age at which they are obligated in the <i>mitzvot<\/i> are exempt from the fasts that the Rabbis instituted.\u00a0 And the Sages did not require us to train our children to fast for a few hours; they did so only in regard to Yom Kippur, which is Torah-based\u2026\u00a0 Nonetheless, many have a custom to train their children to fast a few hours, each one according to his or her strength.\u00a0 But children should not fast all day long (Rama of Panow 111; see KHC 554:23).\u00a0 When feeding children on a fast day, one should give them only simple foods, in order to teach them to mourn with the congregation (MB 550:5).<\/p>\n<p>Brides and grooms are obligated to fast on the minor fast days.\u00a0 Even though they have a <i>mitzvah<\/i> to rejoice for seven days after their wedding, and they are therefore forbidden to accept upon themselves a private fast, nonetheless, they must observe public fasts, because public mourning overrides private joy.\u00a0 Moreover, brides and grooms have a special <i>mitzvah<\/i> to remember the <i>churban<\/i> (the destruction of the Temple), as it says (<i>Tehillim<\/i> 137:6), <i>If I fail to raise Jerusalem above my highest joy<\/i> (Ritva, BH 549:1.\u00a0 Many authorities are lenient regarding Ta\u2019anit Esther; see below, chap. 14, n. 12).<\/p>\n<p>The main participants of a <i>brit milah<\/i> (circumcision) \u2013 namely, the father, the <i>sandak<\/i>, and the <i>mohel<\/i> \u2013 are also obligated to fast. \u00a0The same is true of a father who redeems his firstborn son (<i>pidyon ha-ben<\/i>) on a fast day; he may not eat.\u00a0 Instead, the custom is to perform the <i>brit<\/i> or the <i>pidyon<\/i> towards the end of the fast and have the [festive] meal after the stars emerge.<sup><a href='#_ze01ftn7_12' id='_ze01ftnref7_12' class='aup1'>[12]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Soldiers who are engaged in a defensive operation that is liable to be compromised if they fast should eat and drink as usual so that they can carry out their mission properly. \u00a0However, soldiers who are [merely] training must fast.<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/>\n<div>\n<a href='#_ze01ftnref7_12' id='_ze01ftn7_12'>[12]<\/a>. According to the Gra (end of 686), the main participants of a <i>brit<\/i> and a bridegroom on the day of his wedding do not have to observe the minor fasts.\u00a0 Most <i>poskim<\/i>, however, hold that they must fast.\u00a0 When the fast is postponed, however, the main celebrants may eat after <i>Minchah<\/i> time [which is half an hour after midday], even if it is Tish\u2019a B\u2019Av.\u00a0 So says the <i>Shulchan Aruch<\/i> (559:9).\u00a0 And even though some authorities rule strictly on the matter, as the Kaf HaChayim (559:74) explains, the majority rules leniently.\u00a0 The Mishnah Berurah and the author of <i>Torat HaMo\u2019adim<\/i> (2:5-6) concur.\u00a0 However, the Aruch HaShulchan (559:9) writes: \u201cNevertheless, we have not seen or heard of anyone who does this, especially concerning us who eat most of our [festive] meals at night.\u00a0 [This is true] of all fasts, not only of Tish\u2019a B\u2019Av.\u00a0 And even if a fast is postponed, we do not partake of a festive meal until nighttime, whether it is for a <i>brit milah<\/i> or a <i>pidyon ha-ben<\/i>.\u00a0 This is the common practice, and one should not act differently.\u201d\u00a0 See <i>Piskei Teshuvot<\/i> 549:2.\u00a0 Since Ta\u2019anit Esther is a more lenient fast, the Sha\u2019ar HaTziyun (686:16) writes that one may rely on the Gra and act leniently.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Children who have yet to reach the age at which they are obligated in the mitzvot are exempt from the fasts that the Rabbis instituted.\u00a0 And the Sages did not require us to train our children to fast for a few hours; they did so only in regard to Yom Kippur, which is Torah-based\u2026\u00a0 Nonetheless, [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[60],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5847","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-05-07"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
