{"id":5849,"date":"2010-02-07T10:00:57","date_gmt":"2010-02-07T08:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ph.yhb.org.il\/en\/?p=5849"},"modified":"2010-02-07T10:00:57","modified_gmt":"2010-02-07T08:00:57","slug":"05-07-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ph.yhb.org.il\/en\/05-07-10\/","title":{"rendered":"10 \u2013 The Aneinu Prayer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Rabbis prescribed that we add a special blessing for the fast, called <i>Aneinu<\/i>, in our prayers.\u00a0 The cantor inserts it in between the blessings of <i>Go\u2019el Yisrael<\/i> and <i>Refa\u2019einu<\/i> when he repeats the <i>Shemoneh Esrei<\/i> of <i>Shacharit<\/i> and <i>Minchah<\/i>. \u00a0He says it only if there are at least six people in the congregation fasting, and he has to be one of them (SA 566:5).<sup><a href='#_ze01ftn7_13' id='_ze01ftnref7_13' class='aup1'>[13]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Individuals, however, do not say <i>Aneinu<\/i> as a separate blessing in their silent prayers.\u00a0 Rather, they insert it in the middle of the blessing of <i>Shomei\u2019a Tefillah<\/i> (<i>Ta\u2019anit<\/i> 13b).\u00a0 There are various customs as to when we say <i>Aneinu<\/i>.\u00a0 Some say that one should recite <i>Aneinu<\/i> in all three prayers of the day.\u00a0 And even though we do not fast at night, one should say it in <i>Ma\u2019ariv<\/i> because the day as a whole is called a fast day.\u00a0 Yemenite Jews and some Sefardic Jews follow this custom.\u00a0 Most Sefardim say <i>Aneinu<\/i> only when the fast is in effect.\u00a0 Therefore, on the minor fasts they say it in <i>Shacharit<\/i> and <i>Minchah<\/i>, and on Tish\u2019a B\u2019Av, they say it also in <i>Ma\u2019ariv<\/i> (based on Razah, KHC 565:17).\u00a0 Ashkenazi Jews are accustomed to saying <i>Aneinu<\/i> in <i>Minchah<\/i> alone, because they are concerned that perhaps someone will say it in <i>Shacharit<\/i>, become weak during the day, and break his fast. \u00a0Then, his statement \u201con this day of our fast\u201d will turn out to be a lie.\u00a0 Therefore, they say <i>Aneinu<\/i> only in <i>Minchah<\/i>, because one who has fasted this long will probably complete the fast (based on the Geonim and Rashi; Rama 565:3).\u00a0 Everyone should continue his family custom.<\/p>\n<p>One who eats less than an olive-sized portion of food or drinks less than a cheek full of liquid is considered to still be fasting and should say <i>Aneinu<\/i>.\u00a0 But if one eats or drinks more than that, he has broken his fast and may not recite <i>Aneinu<\/i>.<sup><a href='#_ze01ftn7_14' id='_ze01ftnref7_14' class='aup1'>[14]<\/a><\/sup> (Nonetheless, he must continue fasting, as we mentioned above in sec. 6).<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/>\n<div>\n<a href='#_ze01ftnref7_13' id='_ze01ftn7_13'>[13]<\/a>. The Shulchan Aruch (566:3) writes that the cantor says <i>Aneinu<\/i> only if there are ten people fasting.\u00a0 However, many Acharonim explain that this is true only if a particular community establishes a day of fasting, but regarding the four fasts that the Prophets instituted, six fasters are sufficient.\u00a0 See MB 566:14, <i>Torat HaMo\u2019adim<\/i> 3:12, and <i>Piskei Teshuvot<\/i> 566:4.\u00a0 When there are less than six people fasting, the cantor should say <i>Aneinu<\/i> in the blessing of <i>Shomei\u2019a Tefillah<\/i>, as an individual does.<\/p>\n<p>If the cantor forgets to say <i>Aneinu<\/i> and has not yet said God\u2019s name at the end of the blessing of <i>Refa\u2019einu<\/i>, he should go back and recite <i>Aneinu<\/i> [in its proper place].\u00a0 If, however, he has already said God\u2019s name, he should say <i>Aneinu<\/i> in the blessing of <i>Shomei\u2019a Tefillah<\/i>, as an individual does.\u00a0 And if he forgets to insert it even there, he should say it, without its conclusion [\u201cBlessed are You, O Lord, Who answers in time of trouble\u201d], after \u201cBlessed are You\u2026Who blesses His nation Israel with peace,\u201d before he says, \u201cMay the expression of my mouth \u2026\u201d (MB 119:19).\u00a0 An individual who forgets to say <i>Aneinu<\/i> in <i>Shomei\u2019a Tefillah<\/i> should insert it in the supplications that follow the <i>Shemoneh Esrei<\/i>.\u00a0 See <i>Piskei Teshuvot<\/i> 565:2.\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<a href='#_ze01ftnref7_14' id='_ze01ftn7_14'>[14]<\/a>. There are varying opinions on this issue, and the [Chafetz Chayim] writes in his <i>Mishnah Berurah<\/i> (568:3), citing <i>Nahar Shalom<\/i>, that one should say <i>Aneinu<\/i>.\u00a0 In his <i>Bi\u2019ur Halachah<\/i> (565:1), however, he cites <i>Ma\u2019amar Mordechai<\/i> as saying that one who eats on a fast day should not say <i>Aneinu<\/i> at all.\u00a0 The author of <i>Shevet HaLevi<\/i> (5:60) reconciles this contradiction by saying that one who is exempt from fasting should not say <i>Aneinu<\/i>, while one who eats accidentally should say it, because the fast is [still] relevant to him.\u00a0 In my humble opinion, however, one can clearly infer from the Ashkenazi custom not to say <i>Aneinu<\/i> in <i>Shacharit<\/i> because one may not fast [the entire day] that one who has already eaten should not say it.\u00a0 Many Sefardim adopt this custom, as <i>Torat HaMo\u2019adim<\/i> (1:16) writes.\u00a0 Even one who [merely] intends on eating, but has not yet done so, should not say <i>Aneinu<\/i> (SA 562:1; see MB ibid. 6).<\/p>\n<p>It is also unclear how much one needs to eat in order to be considered no longer fasting.\u00a0 Regarding Yom Kippur, <i>Chazal<\/i> say that eating food the size of a dried date in the time it takes to eat a <i>p\u2019ras<\/i> (half a loaf), or drinking a cheek full of liquid, nullifies the pangs of fasting.\u00a0 However, the Shulchan Aruch (568:1) writes that one who eats an olive-sized portion of food in the time it takes to eat a <i>p\u2019ras<\/i> has broken his fast, for an olive-size is the standard measure for all [<i>mitzvot<\/i> or sins related] to eating.\u00a0 See <i>Piskei Teshuvot<\/i> 568:1, who explains that the Acharonim debate the matter.\u00a0 And since there is doubt regarding this issue, it is better to be passive and not say <i>Aneinu<\/i> if one ate an olive-size of food.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Rabbis prescribed that we add a special blessing for the fast, called Aneinu, in our prayers.\u00a0 The cantor inserts it in between the blessings of Go\u2019el Yisrael and Refa\u2019einu when he repeats the Shemoneh Esrei of Shacharit and Minchah. \u00a0He says it only if there are at least six people in the congregation fasting, [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[60],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5849","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-05-07"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
