L’chatchilah<\/i>, a person should not recite the Amidah<\/i> before vatikin<\/i> because, according to a number of poskim<\/i>, the time to pray l’chatchilah<\/i> begins at netz hachamah<\/i> and lasts four hours. The ideal time to pray the Amidah<\/i> is immediately at the start of \u201cvatikin<\/i>\u201d, just as the devoted ones prayed. Therefore, it seems that for a person whose prayer lasts approximately 25 minutes from the beginning until the Amidah<\/i>, the earliest time he may begin to pray is 25 minutes before netz<\/i>.<\/p>\n

One who must be on his way, or must start work earlier, is permitted to begin praying from the time of misheyakir<\/i>, since by then a little light has spread over the earth, and that moment is the valid time for the recital of Shema<\/i> and for the mitzvot<\/i> of tzitzit<\/i> and tefillin<\/i>. We have already learned that the time of misheyakir<\/i> is approximately 50 minutes before netz<\/i> (see note 2).<\/p>\n

One who needs to pray even earlier should begin his prayer without tallit<\/i> and tefillin<\/i> and proceed until the conclusion of Pesukei d\u2019Zimrah<\/i>. When he finishes Yishtabach<\/i> he must wait for the time of misheyakir<\/i>, and only then put on his tallit<\/i> and tefillin<\/i> and continue praying.[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

[8]<\/a>.L’chatchilah<\/i>, one may not recite the Amidah<\/i> before vatikin<\/i> because, according to most poskim<\/i>, among them the Rambam<\/i> and Shulchan Aruch<\/i>, the time from amud hashachar<\/i> until netz hachamah<\/i> is valid for prayer only b\u2019dieved<\/i>, as explained in note 4 of this chapter. Also, in terms of Keriat Shema<\/i>, according to a few poskim<\/i> (Rambam<\/i> and Rabbeinu Tam<\/i>) the time of misheyakir<\/i> until netz<\/i> is b\u2019dieved<\/i>. Most poskim<\/i> maintain that it is l’chatchilah<\/i> regarding Keriat Shema<\/i>. However, since Keriat Shema<\/i> is adjoined to the Amidah<\/i>, one may not pray the Amidah<\/i> l’chatchilah<\/i> before vatikin<\/i>.<\/p>\n

In times of need, one may recite the Amidah<\/i> at misheyakir<\/i>, for that is when the time of Keriat Shema<\/i> begins according to most poskim<\/i>, as the Shulchan Aruch<\/i> 58:1 rules, and as is clarified earlier in note 3 of this chapter. That is also when the time to put on tzitzit<\/i> and tefillin <\/i>begins, as explained in Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim<\/i> 18:3; 30:1. One may finish Pesukei d\u2019Zimrah<\/i> and Yishtabach<\/i> before that, and when the time of misheyakir<\/i> arrives, wrap himself in a tallit<\/i> and put on tefillin<\/i>, as brought by Bei\u2019ur Halachah<\/i> 58:1, s.v. \u201cZeman<\/i>.\u201d However, one may not do so earlier than that, since only in extenuating circumstances may one recite Keriat Shema<\/i> and its berachot<\/i> before misheyakir<\/i>.
