{"id":6249,"date":"2010-01-15T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-01-15T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ph.yhb.org.il\/en\/?p=6249"},"modified":"2018-05-24T11:38:13","modified_gmt":"2018-05-24T08:38:13","slug":"02-15-06","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ph.yhb.org.il\/en\/02-15-06\/","title":{"rendered":"06 &#8211; Kavanah While Reciting the First Verse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One must have upmost <i>kavanah<\/i> while reciting the first verse of the <i>Shema<\/i>, in accepting the yoke of Heaven, as it is written (Deuteronomy 6:6), \u201cPut these words&#8230; <b>in your heart<\/b>.\u201d Therefore, a person must concentrate in his heart on the words he is saying while reciting the first verse. If he did not concentrate on the words he recited, he did not fulfill his obligation (<i>Berachot<\/i> 13b; <i>Shulchan Aruch<\/i>, 60:5, 63:4).<\/p>\n<p>Even a person who concentrates on the full meaning of every word with <i>kavanah<\/i> must try not to let his mind wander to other thoughts in the middle of the verse. However, <i>b\u2019dieved<\/i>, as long as he was also thinking of the meaning of the words, he fulfilled his obligation.<sup><a id=\"_te02ftnref15_2\" class=\"aup1\" href=\"#_te02ftn15_2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Thus, when saying \u201c<i>Shema Yisrael<\/i>,\u201d it is proper to reflect upon how the mitzvah of accepting the yoke of Heaven is destined for Israel, a nation that was created in order to reveal the belief in the unity of Hashem in the world. The word \u201c<i>Hashem<\/i>,\u201d which is not read as it is written, is spelled, \u201c<i>yud<\/i>\u201d \u201c<i>heh<\/i>\u201d \u201c<i>vav<\/i>\u201d \u201c<i>heh<\/i>\u201d and pronounced \u201c<i>A-donai<\/i>.\u201d While saying it, one should have in mind the way it is pronounced, that Hashem is the Master (<i>Adon<\/i>) of everything, and concentrate on the way it is written, that He was, is, and will be (<i>Hayah<\/i>, <i>Hoveh<\/i>, <i>V\u2019yihiyeh<\/i>). In reciting the word \u201c<i>Elokeinu<\/i>,\u201d one should know that God is firm and omnipotent, Master of all existing powers, and that He rules over us (<i>Shulchan Aruch<\/i> 5:1). When a person says \u201c<i>Echad<\/i>,\u201d it should be with the <i>kavanah<\/i> that Hashem is the only ruler of the world, in the heavens and the earth, and the four directions of the world. This meaning is implied in the letters of the word \u201c<i>Echad<\/i>\u201d: \u201c<i>Alef<\/i>\u201d \u2013 that He is One, \u201c<i>Chet<\/i>\u201d<i> <\/i>\u2013<i> <\/i>signifying the seven heavens in addition to the earth, and \u201c<i>Dalet<\/i>\u201d<i> <\/i>\u2013 representing the four directions. One must extend the pronunciation of the letter <i>dalet<\/i> as long as it takes for him to think of the fact that <i>HaKadosh Baruch Hu<\/i> is One in His world and that He rules in the four directions of the world (<i>Shulchan Aruch<\/i> 61:6; and see <i>Mishnah Berurah <\/i>18).<\/p>\n<p><i>B\u2019dieved<\/i>, even if a person did not have in mind the exact meaning of the Name of Hashem and each and every word, but he understood their overall significance\u00a0 \u2013\u00a0 the acceptance of the yoke of Heaven \u2013 he fulfilled his obligation.<sup><a id=\"_te02ftnref15_3\" class=\"aup1\" href=\"#_te02ftn15_3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>However, if his mind wandered and he did not concentrate on even the general meaning of the words \u2013 the acceptance of the yoke of Heaven \u2013 then he did not fulfill his obligation, and he must repeat the words and recite them with their meaning in mind. If he remembers this immediately upon finishing the first verse, he must wait a bit, so as not to be seen as one who is reciting <i>Shema<\/i> twice, and then repeat the first verse quietly. If he remembers in the middle of the first paragraph, he must stop, start from the beginning of the first paragraph, and recite the whole passage in order. If he remembers in the middle of the second paragraph, he finishes that paragraph, after that goes back and repeats the entire first paragraph, and then skips to the third paragraph, <i>Vayomer<\/i>. He need not repeat the second paragraph because he already had the appropriate <i>kavanah<\/i> while saying it and <i>b\u2019dieved<\/i>, the order of the paragraphs does not prevent him from fulfilling his obligation (<i>Mishnah Berurah <\/i>63:14; <i>Kaf HaChaim<\/i> 17-18).<\/p>\n<p>In order to arouse <i>kavanah<\/i>, it is customary to read the first verse out loud and to cover one\u2019s eyes with his right hand so as not to look at anything else that might interfere with his concentration (<i>Shulchan Aruch<\/i> 61:4-5; <i>Mishnah Berurah<\/i> 17).<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/>\n<div>\n<p><a id=\"_te02ftn15_2\" href=\"#_te02ftnref15_2\">[2]<\/a>.\u00a0See <i>Bei\u2019ur<\/i> <i>Halachah<\/i> 101:1 s.v. \u201c<i>Hamitpalel<\/i>,\u201d based on the <i>Rashba<\/i> brought by the <i>Beit<\/i> <i>Yosef<\/i> 63:4. The <i>Rashba<\/i> indicates that one must not let his mind wander and thereby not have <i>kavanah<\/i> to accept upon himself the yoke of Heaven. However, <i>b\u2019dieved<\/i>, if he had <i>kavanah<\/i> and also dreamed in the middle, his dreaming did not nullify his <i>kavanah<\/i>.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><a id=\"_te02ftn15_3\" href=\"#_te02ftnref15_3\">[3]<\/a>.\u00a0<i>Chazal<\/i> explain that this <i>kavanah<\/i> for the word \u201c<i>Echad<\/i>\u201d is only <i>l&#8217;chatchilah<\/i>, as it is told in <i>Berachot<\/i> 13b that Rabbi Yirmiyah greatly extended the word \u201c<i>Echad<\/i>.\u201d Rabbi Chiya said to him, \u201cBecause you have anointed Him up and down and in all four directions, it is not necessary to have further <i>kavanah<\/i>.\u201d So it is regarding the <i>kavanah<\/i> in saying Hashem\u2019s Name. If the halachah is such that one who does not have the <i>kavanah<\/i> specified in the <i>Shulchan<\/i> <i>Aruch<\/i> <i>Orach<\/i> <i>Chaim<\/i> 5 does not fulfill his obligation, the Talmud should have specifically explained this obligation. Additionally, it seems from the words of the <i>Mishnah<\/i> <i>Berurah<\/i> 62:3 that the required <i>kavanah<\/i> is for a general understanding of the verse. He writes that it is best that even one who does not understand the holy tongue recite <i>Shema<\/i> in Hebrew, since it is highly unlikely to find a Jew who does not understand the meaning of the first verse.
