A person who forgot to pray, or did not pray due to circumstances beyond his control, must make up the missed prayer. If he forgot to pray Shacharit<\/i>, he makes it up after Minchah<\/i>. First he prays Minchah<\/i>, and after the last Kaddish<\/i>, he recites the Amidah<\/i> again to make up for the missed Shacharit<\/i>. If he wishes to pray the supplementary prayer together with the Amidah<\/i> repetition, he is permitted to do so; however, he must be careful to pause between the two recitals of the Amidah<\/i> for at least the amount of time that it takes to walk the distance of four amot<\/i>.<\/p>\n

If one forgets to pray Minchah<\/i>, he makes it up after Ma\u2019ariv.<\/i> Following the last Kaddish<\/i>, he recites the Amidah<\/i> again as a supplementary prayer for the missed Minchah<\/i>. If he forgets to pray Ma\u2019ariv<\/i>, he makes it up after Shacharit<\/i>; either he prays the supplementary Ma\u2019ariv Amidah<\/i> together with the Amidah<\/i> repetition, or he recites it after the last Kaddish<\/i> of Shacharit.<\/i>[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Whoever forgets to recite a supplementary prayer after the obligatory Amidah<\/i> can b\u2019dieved<\/i> make it up during the entire time specified to recite that prayer. This means that if one does not pray a supplementary prayer for Minchah<\/i> immediately after Ma\u2019ariv<\/i>, he can b\u2019dieved<\/i> make it up until chatzot<\/i> (halachic midnight), since l’chatchilah<\/i> that is the last possible time to pray Ma\u2019ariv<\/i>. There are those who say that b\u2019dieved<\/i> it can be made up even until amud hashachar<\/i>. If one did not pray the supplementary prayer for Ma\u2019ariv<\/i> immediately after he recited the Amidah<\/i> for Shacharit<\/i>, he can b\u2019dieved<\/i> make it up until the conclusion of four hours. If he did not pray the supplementary prayer for Shacharit<\/i> immediately after the Minchah Amidah<\/i>, he can b\u2019dieved<\/i> make it up until bein hashemashot<\/i> (see Mishnah Berurah<\/i> 108:15; Kaf HaChaim<\/i> 11). He should not wait until the end of the time to pray. Instead, he should stand and pray immediately upon remembering that he missed the supplementary prayer so as not to lengthen the interval between the obligatory prayer and the supplementary prayer. Even if he began to eat, he must immediately stop eating and pray the supplementary prayer (Mishnah Berurah<\/i> 108:10).<\/p>\n

The person praying must be careful to pray the supplementary prayer after the obligatory one. If he intended to recite the first prayer as supplementary and the second as obligatory, he did not fulfill his obligation of the supplementary prayer, and he must pray a third Amidah<\/i> in order to make up for the forgotten prayer. For instance, if a person forgot to pray Minchah<\/i> on Shabbat, and on Motza\u2019ei Shabbat<\/i> in the Amidah<\/i> of Ma\u2019ariv<\/i> he did not recite the Havdalah<\/i> wording, \u201cAttah Chonantanu<\/i>,\u201d having in mind that it is for the supplementary Minchah<\/i>, whereas in his second Amidah<\/i> he did recite the Havdalah<\/i> wording, he must repeat the supplementary prayer for Minchah<\/i>. However, if he mistakenly forgot to say Attah Chonantanu<\/i> in the first Amidah<\/i> and then remembers in the second Amidah<\/i> and recites it, since he intended the first Amidah<\/i> to be for Ma\u2019ariv<\/i> and the second to be as a supplement for Minchah<\/i>, he fulfilled his obligation.[10]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

[9]<\/a>. The <\/span>Acharonim<\/i> disagree as to whether or not it is permissible to fulfill one\u2019s obligation of a supplementary prayer (<\/span>tashlumim<\/i>) by hearing the <\/span>chazan<\/i>\u2019s repetition of the <\/span>Amidah<\/i>. According to the <\/span>Pri Megadim<\/i> and the <\/span>Mishnah Berurah<\/i> 108:5, since it is an obligation to pray a supplementary <\/span>Amidah<\/i>, one who knows how to pray by himself cannot fulfill his obligation by hearing the repetition. According to the <\/span>Chida<\/i>, it is permissible to fulfill one\u2019s obligation of the supplementary <\/span>Ma\u2019ariv Amidah<\/i> by hearing the <\/span>Shacharit<\/i>Amidah<\/i> repetition, since in essence <\/span>Ma\u2019ariv<\/i> is optional. That is also how <\/span>Kaf HaChaim<\/i> 108:6 rules, but he adds that a verification must be made that the <\/span>chazan<\/i>, indeed, has <\/span>kavanah<\/i> to fulfill the obligation of those who are listening to his repetition, as written in <\/span>Yalkut Yosef<\/i> 108:7. The <\/span>Mishnah Berurah<\/i>, too, is lenient <\/span>b\u2019dieved<\/i>, and rules that if a person has <\/span>kavanah<\/i> to fulfill his obligation of a supplementary <\/span>Ma\u2019ariv<\/i> in the <\/span>Amidah<\/i> repetition of <\/span>Shacharit<\/i>, he does fulfill it. <\/span>Aruch HaShulchan<\/i> 108:16 is completely lenient, meaning that in the <\/span>Amidah<\/i> repetition of <\/span>Minchah<\/i> as well, one can fulfill his obligation if he missed the <\/span>Shacharit<\/i> prayer. Regarding the <\/span>chazan<\/i> himself, everyone agrees that the <\/span>Amidah<\/i> repetition that he recites can effectively be considered as his supplementary prayer (<\/span>Mishnah Berurah<\/i> 108:4).<\/span>It seems that when the Shulchan Aruch<\/i> 108:2 writes that a person prays again after Shacharit<\/i>, he is referring specifically to one who is praying individually. However, if he is praying in a minyan<\/i>, it is preferable that he prays his supplementary prayer together with the chazan<\/i>\u2019s Amidah<\/i> repetition or after the last Kaddish<\/i>, for if he does not, he loses out on responding to some of the Kaddishim<\/i> as well as reciting Kedushah d\u2019Sidra<\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

[10]<\/a>.\u00a0The majority of <\/span>poskim<\/i> maintain that everything depends on the person\u2019s <\/span>kavanah<\/i> (<\/span>Mishnah Berurah<\/i> 108:28, unlike the <\/span>Taz<\/i>). The <\/span>Magen Avraham<\/i> and <\/span>Taz<\/i> are doubtful concerning a case in which a person has <\/span>kavanah<\/i> in the first <\/span>Amidah<\/i> for <\/span>tashlumim<\/i> and the second one as an obligation, but he did not recite <\/span>Attah Chonantanu<\/i> and lacks tangible proof that he prayed the second <\/span>Amidah<\/i> as the obligatory prayer. Therefore, perhaps he does not need to repeat his prayer. Nevertheless, the opinion of the <\/span>Shulchan Aruch<\/i> and most <\/span>poskim<\/i> is that he must repeat the <\/span>Amidah<\/i>, and that is the halachah. It is best that he make a stipulation that if he is not obligated to recite this prayer, his prayer is considered voluntary (<\/span>Mishnah Berurah<\/i> 108:7; <\/span>Yalkut Yosef<\/i>, part 1, p. 214).<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
