{"id":6538,"date":"2010-01-26T03:00:22","date_gmt":"2010-01-26T01:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ph.yhb.org.il\/en\/?p=6538"},"modified":"2018-05-24T12:19:57","modified_gmt":"2018-05-24T09:19:57","slug":"02-26-03","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ph.yhb.org.il\/en\/02-26-03\/","title":{"rendered":"03 &#8211; Additional Laws"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After reciting <i>Shema<\/i> and <i>HaMapil<\/i>, whoever must talk, eat, drink, or tend to an urgent matter is permitted to do so since <i>Birkat<\/i> <i>HaMapil<\/i> is unlike <i>Birkot HaNehenin<\/i>, concerning which it is forbidden to interrupt between the <i>berachah<\/i> and the pleasure derived. Rather, it is a <i>berachah<\/i> of praise on the night\u2019s sleep. However, <i>l&#8217;chatchilah<\/i>, it is best to recite the bedtime <i>Shema<\/i> immediately before sleep (see <i>Rama<\/i> 239:1; <i>Tzitz Eliezer<\/i> 7:27; <i>Yechaveh Da\u2019at<\/i> 4, pp. 118-122; <i>Piskei Teshuvot<\/i> 239:3; however <i>Mishnah Berurah<\/i> 239:4 is stringent after <i>HaMapil<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>One may recite the passages of the bedtime <i>Shema<\/i> while lying down, but he must be careful to lean on his side. There are a number of reasons why the <i>Chachamim<\/i> prohibited a man to sleep while lying on his back (<i>Mishnah Berurah<\/i> 239:6). However, before one\u2019s sleep, a man is permitted to read a book while lying on his back and it is unnecessary for him to turn on his side. Only when he is about to fall asleep must he beware of lying on his back (<i>Az Nidberu<\/i> 6:50).<\/p>\n<p>The <i>Ba\u2019alei Mussar<\/i> (Jewish ethicists who composed books of reproof for the nation) wrote that it is good for a person to make a personal accounting (<i>cheshbon nefesh<\/i>) before sleep. If he remembers sinning, he confesses his sin and takes it upon himself not to sin in that manner again. It is also proper that before going to sleep, every person forgives anyone who sinned against him or caused him harm, so that no one is punished because of him.
