Wearing a Belt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">A man may not recite sacred words (<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">devarim she-bikdusha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">)<\/span><i> <\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">while there is no separation between his heart and his <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">erva<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\"> (nakedness). Thus, one wearing a long cloak or robe without underwear who wishes to recite sacred words must wear a belt to divide between his heart and his <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">erva<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">. However a woman\u2019s nakedness is lower down, and her heart naturally cannot \u201csee\u201d her <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">erva<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">. Hence, a woman may recite sacred words while dressed in a robe, even without a separation between her heart and her <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">erva<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Prior to the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">, a man must put on a belt. Some <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">poskim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\"> maintain that the reason for this is to create a division between one\u2019s heart and one\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">erva<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">, in which case wearing underwear is sufficient and there is no need for a belt. Others say that specifically a belt must be worn in honor of the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">, so as to more effectively emphasize the division between one\u2019s heart and one\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">erva<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\"> (SA 91:2; <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Peninei Halakha: Prayer<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\"> 5:3).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">However, women, who are not required to create a division between their hearts and their <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">erva<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">, do not need to wear a belt when praying.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A man may not recite sacred words (devarim she-bikdusha) while there is no separation between his heart and his erva (nakedness).
