Prayer in Open Areas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">One should not recite the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\"> in an open area, and one who does so is called \u201cinsolent\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Berakhot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\"> 34b), because in an open area one\u2019s thoughts scatter, whereas in a private place place the King\u2019s awe is upon her and her heart is humbled (SA 90:5). Furthermore, in an open space, there is concern that people will pass by and disturb her concentration. Those who are traveling may pray along their way, and if there are trees there, it is better to pray among them (MB 90:11). Similarly, it is preferable to pray next to a wall than in a completely open area (<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Eshel Avraham <\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">[<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Buczacz<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">] 90:5). A courtyard surrounded by walls is considered a private place, almost like a house, since the defining factor is the presence of walls, not a ceiling (MB<\/span><i> <\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">90:12).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">It is permissible <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">le-khat\u0125ila<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\"> to pray in the plaza of the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Kotel<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\"> (the Western Wall) because it is surrounded by walls on three sides. Moreover, the holiness of the site reinforces one\u2019s love and awe of God, causing one\u2019s prayer to be said with more<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> kavana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">. The patriarch Yitz\u0125ak did this when he recited <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Min\u0125a<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\"> on Mount Moriah, which was then an open field, as it says: \u201cYitz\u0125ak went out to meditate<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">in the field\u201d (Bereishit 24:63; <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Berakhot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\"> 26b; <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Midrash Tehillim<\/span><\/i> <\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a7<\/span><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">81). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">It is forbidden to pray in front of a synagogue because if person praying faces the direction of Jerusalem, her back will be disrespectfully turned towards the synagogue. If she faces the synagogue, her back will be turned to Jerusalem, in the opposite direction towards which the congregants inside are praying.
