Three Steps toward Prayer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">During the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> prayer we stand before God, the King of kings. This is not the case regarding other <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">berakhot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> and prayers: although all prayers must be recited with solemnity and <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">kavana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, they are not on the same level as the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, in which we stand before the King. Therefore, the Sages instituted special <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">halakhot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> that pertain solely to the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> prayer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">In order to express one\u2019s desire to come closer to God and to stand before Him, we customarily take three steps toward the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida <\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">prayer (Rema 95:1). After finishing these steps, one stands in place and only then recites the verse \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Ado-nai sefatai tifta\u0125 u-fi yagid tehilatekha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u201d (\u201cMy Lord, open my lips and my mouth will speak your praises\u201d; Tehilim 51:7), since that verse is part of the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">One who goes to synagogue or prays in a designated place in her house has already taken more than three steps to get there, and therefore need not take another three steps prior to praying the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Eliya Rabba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">). Some <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">poskim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> say that it is proper even for one who already walked to her place of prayer to take another three steps forward, immediately before beginning the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, if a significant amount of time has elapsed since she arrived at her place of prayer (<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Ben Ish \u0124ai<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Be-shala\u0125<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> 3; <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Kaf Ha-\u0125ayim <\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">95:7). However, because it is not appropriate to take three steps back and immediately afterwards three steps forward, one who wishes to be meticulous about this should take three steps back a short time before the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, and, after waiting a bit, take three steps forward to begin the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Minhagei Maharil<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">; MB 95:3). <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During the Amida prayer we stand before God, the King of kings.
