Some additions, if forgotten, prevent one\u2019s fulfillment of the duty to pray, and other additions must be recited <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">le-khat\u0125ila<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, but <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">be-di\u2019avad<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, if omitted, do not preclude one from fulfilling her obligation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">On <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u0124ol Ha-mo\u2019ed <\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">of Pesa\u0125 and Sukkot, the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Ya\u2019aleh Ve-yavo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> paragraph is added in <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Birkat Ha\u2019avoda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">. If one already concluded the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> but forgot to recite it, she must repeat the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">. If she did not yet finish the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, she goes back to the beginning of <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Birkat Ha\u2019avoda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, adds <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Ya\u2019aleh Ve-yavo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, and then continues on until the end of the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">. We also recite <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Ya\u2019aleh Ve-yavo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> on Rosh \u0124odesh. If it was omitted in <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Sha\u0125arit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Min\u0125a<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> must be repeated. However, if forgotten in <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Ma\u2019ariv<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> of Rosh \u0124odesh, it is not repeated, because when the new month was sanctified in Jerusalem based on the testimony of eyewitnesses, there was no sanctification at night, and so the sanctity of Rosh \u0124odesh does not yet apply at <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Ma\u2019ariv <\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">(SA 422:1).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">On <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Motza\u2019ei Shabbat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, we add <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Havdala<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Ata \u0124onantanu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">)<\/span><i> <\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">to the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">berakha <\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">of <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Ata \u0124onen<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">. If forgotten, it is not repeated, since she will fulfill her obligation later with <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Havdala<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> over wine (SA 294:1).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">On \u0124anuka and Purim, <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Al Ha-nisim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> is added in <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Modim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">. If<\/span><i> <\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">one<\/span><i> <\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">forgets to recite it, she does not go back, since these holidays are rabbinic, and forgetting to mention them does not prevent one from fulfilling her obligation (SA 682:1).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">On fast days, individuals add <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Aneinu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> in<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> Shome\u2019a Tefila<\/span><\/i>.<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> Ashkenazim only recite it at <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Min\u0125a<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> (Rema 565:3), whereas Sephardim recite it throughout the fast: on Tisha Be-Av at in <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Ma\u2019ariv<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Sha\u0125arit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Min\u0125a<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, and on the other fast days at <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Sha\u0125arit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Min\u0125a<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Kaf Ha-\u0125ayim <\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">565:17). Some have the custom to recite it at <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Ma\u2019ariv<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> on all fast days (R. Masoud \u0124ai Raka\u0125, Maharitz). According to all customs, one who forgets to say <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Aneinu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> does not repeat the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">During the Ten Days of Repentance from Rosh Hashana through Yom Kippur \u2013 days of judgment during which God\u2019s dominion is manifest \u2013 we conclude the third <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">berakha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> of the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida <\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">with \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Ha-Melekh ha-kadosh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u201d and <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Hashiva Shofteinu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> with \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Ha-Melekh ha-mishpat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">.\u201d If one mistakenly says \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Ha-Kel ha-kadosh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u201d in the third <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">berakha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, she must return to the beginning of the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> since, as we have learned, the first three <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">berakhot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> are considered one unit, and anyone who makes a mistake in one of them must go back to the beginning. If she corrects herself immediately (<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">tokh kedei dibur<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">), that is, within the amount of time it takes to say three words at a normal pace, she continues praying. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">If one accidentally concludes <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Hashiva Shofteinu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> as usual (with \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Melekh ohev tzedaka u-mishpat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u201d) and does not correct herself <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">tokh ke-dei dibur<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, according to the custom of Ashkenazim and some Sephardim, she fulfills her obligation <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">be-di\u2019avad<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, because even in the regular formulation the word \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Melekh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u201d (\u201cKing\u201d) is used (Rema 118:1; <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Ben Ish \u0124ai<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">,<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> Nitzavim <\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">19; <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Kaf Ha-\u0125ayim <\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">1). Other Sephardim maintain that she does not fulfill her obligation because she did not recite the correct wording for the Days of Awe. Therefore, if she has not yet finished her <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, she must return to <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Hashiva Shofteinu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, conclude it appropriately, and continue until the end of the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">. If she already finished the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">, she must pray again while stipulating that if she was not obligated to repeat the prayer, the second prayer is considered voluntary (SA 118:1; <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Ye\u0125aveh Da\u2019at<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> 1:57). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">There are four other additions made during the Ten Days of Repentance: \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Zokhreinu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">,\u201d \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Mi Kamokha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">,\u201d \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">U-khetov<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">,\u201d and \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Be-sefer \u0124ayim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">.\u201d If any of them are forgotten, the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> is not repeated (SA 582:5). <sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-8328-1' id='fnref-8328-1' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(8328)'>1<\/a><\/sup> <\/span><\/p>\n<div class='footnotes' id='footnotes-8328'>\n<div class='footnotedivider'><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li id='fn-8328-1'> If one accidentally recites Ya\u2019aleh Ve-yavo, Zokhreinu, or Al Ha-nisim on a regular weekday, she must go back to the beginning of the berakha.
