Situations of Uncertainty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">A woman who prays<\/span> <i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Sha\u0125arit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Min\u0125a<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">, or both on a regular basis and is not sure on a particular day whether or not she recited one of these prayers, as long as the time for its recitation has not yet passed, she recites the prayer and makes mental stipulation:<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">\u201cIf I already prayed, this prayer is considered a voluntary prayer, and if not, this is an obligatory prayer.\u201d It is unnecessary to introduce any personal requests into that <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">, since the fact that she is avoiding <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">safek<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\"> is itself something novel. Even though we do not recite voluntary prayers nowadays, we are permitted to do so in order to avoid uncertainty. If, in the middle of that <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">, she remembers that she already prayed, she continues to recite the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\"> until the end and adds a personal request to demonstrate that it is, indeed, a voluntary prayer.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;color: black;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">If one starts to pray on the basis that her prayer is obligatory, thinking that she did not yet pray, <\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">but suddenly remembers in the middle of her <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\"> that she already <\/span>did, she must<span style=\"color: #000000\"> stop immediately. Her prayer cannot become voluntary, for just like there is no offering that is partly obligatory and partly voluntary, so too, there is no prayer that begins as obligatory and ends as voluntary (SA 107:1).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">One who is daydreaming in the middle of her prayer to the point <\/span>where<span style=\"color: #000000\"> she is unsure what part of the <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Amida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\"> she is reciting, for instance, one who is pondering whether she is reciting the sixth <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">berakha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\"> or the tenth, must return to the sixth <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">berakha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\"> and start to pray from that point on (according to most <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">poskim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">, as cited in <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Peninei Halakha: Prayer<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">, ch. 18 n. 3).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A woman who prays Sha\u0125arit, Min\u0125a, or both on a regular basis and is not sure on a particular day whether or not she recited one of these prayers, as long as the time for its recitation has not yet passed, she recites the prayer and makes mental stipulation: \u201cIf I already prayed, this prayer [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":9,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[117],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-8342","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-03-13"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>5.
