Nefilat Apayim"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After the conclusion of the <em>Sha\u0125arit Amida<\/em>, it is customary for men to \u201cfall on their faces\u201d and plead before God. By doing so, they fulfill the mitzva of prayer in all three of its positions \u2013 <em>Birkhot Keri\u2019at Shema<\/em> while sitting, <em>Shemoneh Esrei<\/em> while standing, and <em>Ta\u0125anun <\/em>(\u201cSupplication\u201d) while bending forward (\u201c<em>Nefilat Apayim<\/em>\u201d). We learn this from our teacher Moshe, who pleaded to God to forgive Israel following the sin of the Golden Calf.<\/p>\n<p><em>Nefilat Apayim<\/em> possesses a special power and is most effective in times of distress. Indeed, we see that when God commanded Moshe and Aharon, during their dispute with Kora\u0125 and his followers, \u201cSeparate yourselves from this group and I will destroy them in an instant,\u201d they immediately understood that they must pray intensely. Therefore, they prayed in prostration: \u201cThey fell on their faces and said: \u2018Lord, God of all living souls, if one man sins, shall You become angry at the entire community?\u2019\u201d (Bamidbar 16:21-22). By virtue of their prayer recited in prostration, the decree was cancelled.<\/p>\n<p><em>Nefilat Apayim<\/em> is so powerful because it expresses the complete surrender of the self to his Creator and total self-sacrifice. It is as if the person is saying to the Almighty: \u201cAll my senses and limbs are void before You. Do to me as You will, for I am all Yours.\u201d Thus, the prayer of <em>Nefilat Apayim<\/em> can repair flaws that cannot be repaired through regular prayer (see <em>Zohar<\/em> <em>Bamidbar<\/em> 120:2).<\/p>\n<p><em>Nefilat Apayim<\/em> also expresses man\u2019s shame before God. After the <em>Amida<\/em>, in which we addressed God\u2019s greatness and set all our requests before Him, we are ashamed to show our faces. How did we dare stand before Him in prayer? So we fall down on our faces. <em>Nefilat Apayim<\/em> also conveys our sorrow as we repent of our sins; we are so anguished that we cannot lift our faces (see Rabbeinu Ba\u0125ya on Bamidbar 16:22).<\/p>\n<p>Despite its great virtue, the Sages did not ordain <em>Nefilat Apayim<\/em> as an obligatory prayer or fix its wording. Anyone who wished would add prayers of supplication while lying prostrate after reciting the <em>Amida<\/em>. Perhaps specifically because of its superior value \u2013 its expression of total submission to the Creator \u2013 it is fitting that it comes from the heart, from one\u2019s unguarded resolve.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After the conclusion of the Sha\u0125arit Amida, it is customary for men to \u201cfall on their faces\u201d and plead before God.
