The Sages teach (Berakhot<\/em> 60b), \u201cWhen going to bed one recites Shema <\/em>until Ve-haya im Shamo\u2019a <\/em>(i.e., the first paragraph of Shema<\/em>) and says the blessing \u2018Barukh Ha-mapil \u0124evlei Sheina<\/em>\u2026\u2019 (\u2018Who brings the bonds of slumber down upon my eyes\u2026\u2019)\u201d Likewise, R. Yehoshua b. Levi said, \u201cEven if one recited Shema<\/em> in the synagogue, it is a mitzva to recite it on his bed.\u201d The Sages support their words with the verse (Tehilim 4:5), \u201cMeditate in your hearts [while] on your beds, and be silent sela<\/em>\u201d (Berakhot<\/em> 4b). There is no difference between men and women concerning these laws. 1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n In sum, according to the enactment of the Sages, one must recite the first paragraph of Shema<\/em> and Ha-mapil<\/em> before going to sleep, but the remaining psalms are not required. Nevertheless, many follow the custom of R. Yehoshua b. Levi and recite these psalms to ward off harmful entities (see MA 239:2). 3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n Some are careful to recite Ha-mapil<\/em> right before going to sleep, after reciting Shema<\/em> and all the other verses. However, according to kabbalistic custom, Ha-mapil<\/em> precedes Shema<\/em> and the other verses.
