Some Laws of Birkat Kohanim"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Birkat Kohanim<\/em> must be recited aloud and in Hebrew. The <em>kohanim <\/em>must stand and lift their hands toward the congregation. A <em>kohen <\/em>who cannot meet these conditions may not perform <em>Birkat Kohanim<\/em> (SA 128:14; <em>Peninei Halakha: Prayer<\/em> 20:4).<\/p>\n<p>Before the <em>kohanim<\/em> lift their hands, they must wash them. There is an allusion to this in the verse: \u201cLift up your hands in holiness and bless God\u201d (Tehilim 134:2). Any <em>kohen<\/em> who did not wash his hands may not bless the congregation (<em>Sota<\/em> 39a).<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Yo\u0125anan b. Zakai enacted that <em>kohanim<\/em> not perform <em>Birkat Kohanim <\/em>while wearing sandals or shoes (as explained in <em>Peninei Halakha: Prayer<\/em> 20:8).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This is the protocol of <em>Birkat Kohanim<\/em>: The <em>\u0125azan<\/em> or the <em>gabbai<\/em> declares \u201c<em>kohanim<\/em>,\u201d but if only one <em>kohen<\/em> goes up before the ark, \u201c<em>kohanim<\/em>\u201d is not declared. This is derived from the verse \u201cSay to them\u201d (Bamidbar 6:23), which is in the plural and indicates that the word \u201c<em>kohanim<\/em>\u201d is only declared when there are at least two <em>kohanim<\/em> present (SA 128:10). <em>Birkat Kohanim <\/em>is not recited by the <em>kohanim<\/em> on their own. Rather, the <em>\u0125azan<\/em> recites each word and the <em>kohanim<\/em> repeat after him.
