The Prohibitions against Fasting, Delivering Eulogies, and Visiting Cemeteries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The holiday of \u0124anuka is a time of joy, praise, and thanksgiving. Therefore, one may not fast or eulogize on \u0124anuka, even on the <em>yahrtzeit<\/em> of a parent \u2013 when many people customarily fast \u2013 that coincides with \u0124anuka. Similarly, a bride and groom who follow the custom of Ashkenazim and some Sephardim to fast on their wedding day do not do so on \u0124anuka.<sup><a href='#_te01ftn11_9' id='_te01ftnref11_9' class='aup1'>[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Likewise, one may not deliver a eulogy on \u0124anuka at a funeral or at a memorial service at the end of the <em>shiva<\/em> or <em>shloshim<\/em> period. The only exception is a Torah scholar\u2019s funeral, where one may eulogize in the presence of the body (<em>Shabbat<\/em> 21b; sa, Rema 670:1). The laws of mourning apply on \u0124anuka as on any other day (sa 696:4).<\/p>\n<p>Many people refrain from visiting cemeteries on \u0124anuka, whether on a <em>yahrtzeit<\/em> or at the conclusion of <em>shiva<\/em> or <em>shloshim<\/em>, because such visits are liable to elicit crying and mourning, which are forbidden on \u0124anuka. Instead, they should visit the cemetery either before or after \u0124anuka. Others, including Moroccan Jews and some Jews from other communities, visit cemeteries even on \u0124anuka. According to all customs, one may visit the graves of righteous people on \u0124anuka (<em>Ben Ish \u0124ai<\/em>, Vayeshev 22; see also <em>Gesher Ha-\u0125ayim<\/em> 29:6).<\/p>\n<p>Sephardic custom is to recite <em>Tziduk Ha-din<\/em> on \u0124anuka (sa 420:2), while Ashkenazic custom is not to do so (Rema 420:2, 683:1). According to all customs, <em>Ta\u0125anun<\/em> and <em>La-menatze\u2019a\u0125<\/em> are omitted on \u0124anuka. Likewise, mourners customarily do not lead prayers on \u0124anuka.<sup><a href='#_te01ftn11_10' id='_te01ftnref11_10' class='aup1'>[10]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<div>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/>\n<div>\n<a href='#_te01ftnref11_9' id='_te01ftn11_9'>[9]<\/a>. When the Jewish people celebrated all the holidays mentioned in <em>Megilat Ta\u2019anit<\/em>, they would refrain from fasting and eulogizing on the day before and the day after \u0124anuka as well. Nowadays, however, one should not be stringent on those two days, because even though \u0124anuka endures for all generations,<em> Megilat Ta\u2019anit<\/em> as a whole was abolished. This is the opinion of <em>Tur<\/em> and sa 686:1. Others take a more stringent view and prohibit fasting on the day before \u0124anuka (<em>Ha-ma\u2019or<\/em>, <em>Pri \u0124adash<\/em>, and <em>Ba\u0125<\/em>). mb states that, <em>le-khat\u0125ila<\/em>, one should heed this viewpoint. See also <em>Kaf Ha-\u0125ayim<\/em> 686:3-7.<\/p>\n<p><a href='#_te01ftnref11_10' id='_te01ftn11_10'>[10]<\/a>. mb 683:1 and <em>Kaf Ha-\u0125ayim<\/em> 683:5 state that a mourner may not lead <em>Sha\u0125arit<\/em> on \u0124anuka or Rosh \u0124odesh, but he may lead <em>Min\u0125a<\/em> or <em>Ma\u2019ariv<\/em>. bhl \u00a7132, however, states that mourners do not lead the services on any day when <em>La-menatze\u2019a\u0125 <\/em>is omitted. The source for this is Maharil \u00a722.
