Trois explications ont \u00e9t\u00e9 donn\u00e9es \u00e0 ces paroles, et toutes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 retenues par la halakha (<em>Choul\u2019han \u2018Aroukh<\/em>, <em>Ora\u2019h \u2018Ha\u00efm<\/em> 90, 20).<\/p>\n<p>La premi\u00e8re signification de ce propos des sages, de m\u00e9moire b\u00e9nie, est qu\u2019il faut prendre soin, quand on entre dans la synagogue, de parcourir au moins une distance correspondant \u00e0 la largeur de deux petites portes (environ 64 cm). En effet, celui qui prie \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la porte de la synagogue semble montrer par cela que la pri\u00e8re est un fardeau \u00e0 ses yeux et que, pour cette raison, il se tient \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 de la porte afin de pouvoir sortir rapidement (Rachi). En revanche, si la place du fid\u00e8le est fix\u00e9e pr\u00e8s de l\u2019entr\u00e9e, il est permis d\u2019y prier, car tout le monde sait que telle est sa place, et qu\u2019il ne se tient pas l\u00e0 parce qu\u2019il est press\u00e9 de sortir (\u00e9l\u00e8ves de Rabb\u00e9nou Yona).<\/p>\n<p>Il ressort clairement de cela qu\u2019a priori, il ne faut pas prier dans le hall attenant \u00e0 l\u2019entr\u00e9e de la synagogue\u00a0; car si les sages ont enseign\u00e9 de ne pas prier, m\u00eame \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur de la synagogue, \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 de l\u2019entr\u00e9e, \u00e0 plus forte raison n\u2019y a-t-il pas lieu de prier dans l\u2019entr\u00e9e qui la pr\u00e9c\u00e8de.<\/p>\n<p>La seconde signification est que l\u2019on ne doit pas si\u00e9ger \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 de l\u2019entr\u00e9e afin de ne pas regarder \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur et distraire ainsi son esprit de la pri\u00e8re (Maharam de Rothenburg). Selon cette explication, il convient aussi de ne pas s\u2019installer pr\u00e8s d\u2019une fen\u00eatre donnant sur l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur.<\/p>\n<p>La troisi\u00e8me explication consiste \u00e0 dire que celui qui vient prier doit attendre quelques secondes, le temps n\u00e9cessaire pour franchir deux portes, avant de commencer sa pri\u00e8re, afin de concentrer sa pens\u00e9e sur la pri\u00e8re (explication mentionn\u00e9e par le Roch).<\/p>\n<p>Il y a ici, de plus, une allusion aux deux portiques spirituels que l\u2019homme doit franchir avant de commencer \u00e0 prier. Au premier portique, il \u00e9cartera de sa pens\u00e9e les pr\u00e9occupations du monde, qui troublent sa tranquillit\u00e9\u00a0; au second portique, il unira son esprit au service divin (cf.
