Le nom de \u00ab\u00a0f\u00eate des azymes\u00a0\u00bb, <em>\u2018hag ha-matsot<\/em>, fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 la r\u00e9v\u00e9lation de la foi, celui de \u00ab\u00a0f\u00eate de P\u00e2que\u00a0\u00bb, <em>\u2018hag ha-Pessa\u2019h<\/em>, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9lection d\u2019Isra\u00ebl<sup><a href='#_te01ftn1_a' id='_te01ftnref1_a' class='aup1'>[a]<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>En effet, lors de la sortie d\u2019Egypte, la providence divine s\u2019est r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9e de la fa\u00e7on la plus manifeste et la plus sensible. Le principe de la foi en Dieu (<em>\u00e9mouna<\/em>) est donc ancr\u00e9 dans l\u2019\u00e9v\u00e8nement de la sortie d\u2019Egypte. C\u2019est \u00e0 cela que fait allusion la matsa, le pain azyme, comme nous le disons dans la Haggada<sup><a href='#_te01ftn1_b' id='_te01ftnref1_b' class='aup1'>[b]<\/a><\/sup> : \u00ab\u00a0Cette matsa que nous mangeons, pourquoi [la mangeons-nous]\u00a0? Parce que la p\u00e2te de nos anc\u00eatres n\u2019avait pas eu le temps de fermenter avant que le Roi des rois, le Saint b\u00e9ni soit-Il se f\u00fbt <strong>d\u00e9voil\u00e9 <\/strong>\u00e0 eux, et qu\u2019Il les d\u00e9livr\u00e2t.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>La th\u00e9matique du peuple d\u2019Isra\u00ebl est, elle aussi, apparue lors de la sortie d\u2019Egypte\u00a0: chacune des plaies qui frapp\u00e8rent le pays a mis davantage en relief la diff\u00e9rence existant entre les H\u00e9breux et les Egyptiens, en ce que les Egyptiens furent frapp\u00e9s et les H\u00e9breux furent \u00e9pargn\u00e9s. Le fa\u00eete de ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne fut atteint lors de la mort des premiers-n\u00e9s \u00e9gyptiens : l\u2019ange exterminateur atteignit toutes les maisons \u00e9gyptiennes, tandis qu\u2019il \u00ab\u00a0sauta\u00a0\u00bb (<em>passa\u2019h<\/em>) au-dessus des maisons isra\u00e9lites. Cette th\u00e9matique trouve son expression dans le sacrifice pascal, qui met en relief l\u2019\u00e9lection d\u2019Isra\u00ebl.<\/p>\n<p>Ces deux principes, <em>\u00e9mouna <\/em>(foi) et peuple d\u2019Isra\u00ebl, sont li\u00e9s et interd\u00e9pendants<sup><a href='#_te01ftn1_c' id='_te01ftnref1_c' class='aup1'>[c]<\/a><\/sup>. \u00c0 la diff\u00e9rence des autres peuples, n\u00e9s de la convergence de tendances humaines, le peuple d\u2019Isra\u00ebl fut fond\u00e9 lors de la sortie d\u2019Egypte, de mani\u00e8re divine, par l\u2019effet de miracles et de prodiges, afin que ce peuple re\u00e7oive la Loi de l\u2019Eternel. Tout le sort d\u2019Isra\u00ebl<sup><a href='#_te01ftn1_d' id='_te01ftnref1_d' class='aup1'>[d]<\/a><\/sup> d\u00e9pend de sa relation au divin\u00a0: d\u00e8s lors que le peuple d\u2019Isra\u00ebl accomplit la volont\u00e9 divine et d\u00e9voile le Nom divin dans le monde<sup><a href='#_te01ftn1_e' id='_te01ftnref1_e' class='aup1'>[e]<\/a><\/sup>, il m\u00e9rite de voir se r\u00e9aliser en lui toutes les b\u00e9n\u00e9dictions annonc\u00e9es par la Torah ; mais lorsqu\u2019il n\u2019accomplit pas la volont\u00e9 divine, les mal\u00e9dictions d\u00e9crites par la Torah l\u2019atteignent<sup><a href='#_te01ftn1_f' id='_te01ftnref1_f' class='aup1'>[f]<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 l\u2019inverse, la r\u00e9v\u00e9lation du Nom divin \u2013 c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire la r\u00e9v\u00e9lation des valeurs divines dans le monde \u2013 d\u00e9pend d\u2019Isra\u00ebl, comme il est dit : \u00ab\u00a0Ce peuple, Je l\u2019ai cr\u00e9\u00e9 pour Moi, il racontera ma louange\u00a0\u00bb (Isa\u00efe 43, 21). C\u2019est pourquoi nos sages nous enseignent\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0La conception d\u2019Isra\u00ebl pr\u00e9c\u00e9da toute chose\u00a0\u00bb (<em>Gn<\/em> <em>Rabba<\/em> 1, 4), c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire qu\u2019avant que ne f\u00fbt cr\u00e9\u00e9e aucune chose au monde, l\u2019intention de cr\u00e9er le peuple d\u2019Isra\u00ebl fut form\u00e9e. Car c\u2019est par le biais d\u2019Isra\u00ebl que se r\u00e9v\u00e8le le but m\u00eame de la cr\u00e9ation du monde. C\u2019est bien ce qu\u2019enseignent nos sages, de m\u00e9moire b\u00e9nie : \u00ab\u00a0Le Saint b\u00e9ni soit-Il a assorti l\u2019\u0153uvre de la Cr\u00e9ation d\u2019une condition, en disant [aux \u00e9l\u00e9ments de la Cr\u00e9ation] : \u201cSi Isra\u00ebl re\u00e7oit la Torah, vous vous maintiendrez, sinon je vous ferai revenir au tohu-bohu\u201d\u00a0\u00bb (<em>Chabbat <\/em>88a). L\u2019\u00e9lection d\u2019Isra\u00ebl s\u2019est r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9e avec d\u2019autant plus de force que Dieu nous a choisis pour \u00eatre son peuple et ses enfants, bien que nous fussions des esclaves humili\u00e9s, enfonc\u00e9s dans quarante-neuf degr\u00e9s d\u2019impuret\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Il se trouve donc que les deux noms de la f\u00eate d\u00e9signent deux aspects d\u2019une m\u00eame r\u00e9alit\u00e9 : <em>la r\u00e9v\u00e9lation du Nom divin dans le monde par le biais d\u2019Isra\u00ebl<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/>\n<div>\n<a href='#_te01ftnref1_a' id='_te01ftn1_a'>[a]<\/a>. Afin de ne pas alourdir le propos, nous renoncerons, dans la suite du texte, \u00e0 traduire syst\u00e9matiquement <em>Pessa\u2019h<\/em> par P\u00e2que et <em>matsa <\/em>(pluriel<em> matsot<\/em>) par azymes. De m\u00eame, dans la suite de l\u2019ouvrage, apr\u00e8s avoir traduit et d\u00e9fini certains termes h\u00e9bra\u00efques d\u2019utilisation fr\u00e9quente, nous ne les traduirons plus \u00e0 chaque occurrence.<\/p>\n<p><a href='#_te01ftnref1_b' id='_te01ftn1_b'>[b]<\/a>. R\u00e9cit de la sortie d\u2019Egypte qu\u2019on lit le soir de Pessa\u2019h, cf. chap. 15.<\/p>\n<p><a href='#_te01ftnref1_c' id='_te01ftn1_c'>[c]<\/a>. Il y a dans le mot <em>\u00e9mouna<\/em> une nuance de confiance, de certitude de pouvoir s\u2019appuyer sur l\u2019aide de Dieu seul, que celle-ci soit imm\u00e9diatement manifeste ou voil\u00e9e, mais aussi de fid\u00e9lit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><a href='#_te01ftnref1_d' id='_te01ftn1_d'>[d]<\/a>. Lorsque l\u2019auteur parle d\u2019Isra\u00ebl sans autre pr\u00e9cision, il d\u00e9signe le <em>\u2018am Isra\u00ebl<\/em>, peuple d\u2019Isra\u00ebl ou peuple juif, comme dans toute la litt\u00e9rature rabbinique.<\/p>\n<p><a href='#_te01ftnref1_e' id='_te01ftn1_e'>[e]<\/a>. Par l\u2019observance des commandements, le peuple juif accomplit la volont\u00e9 divine et contribue ainsi \u00e0 rendre manifeste la pr\u00e9sence divine dans le monde. Or le divin ne se manifeste sur terre\u00a0 qu\u2019en ce que Dieu se donne \u00e0 conna\u00eetre (le <em>Nom divin<\/em>), et non dans son essence m\u00eame, inconnaissable. C\u2019est ce que vise l\u2019expression <em>d\u00e9voiler le Nom divin dans le monde<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href='#_te01ftnref1_f' id='_te01ftn1_f'>[f]<\/a>.
